Don't move, energy stacks up, and just accumulates. then Boom, you have white hair!

Grey hair is reversible

Diary of a CEO Jul 4, 2026

Alright, let's visit the key hook of this story.

Grey hair is reversible - and along with that, the premise is that we can reverse age, restore youth, and all become young again.

Let's break it down.

Five hairs that have this pattern of reversal. What Martin Picard has found was that when people go for biking, come back, repeat this, they have this hair pattern where there's grey and then there's black. Basically, he found that mitochondria was activated during the biking time.

This image basically shows that with less stress, we can regain our black hair. So the age old saying of stress making us gray.. its REAL! Rosenberg, Ayelet M., et al. "Quantitative mapping of human hair greying and reversal in relation to life stress." Elife 10 (2021): e67437.

Grey hair has more mitochondria challenges, it was struggling.

Cortisol creates a stress environment - no real damage per se, but it signals the cells to prepare for stress. This could be in the form of an email, or you are worrying about the future, these stress signals, make your cells upregulate the mitochondria. The energy expenditure is up to 60% more in stressful situations, in cells in a petri dish.

It MAY NOT be reversible - the change to grey to white, cannot be too long. You cannot return to black again if you are like, stressful, for many months or years. If its just a couple of weeks or couple of months (as shown), its possible to reverse it.

Key solution is to prevent stress from draining you. Its the response to stress that makes you grey. Be aware that you're under stress. Do not mount a response if its not needed.

Exercise, like HIITs, creates energy resistance. However, you can adapt for this by having more mitochondria to begin with, and thus acute stress stimulates the process in your body to have more capacity to handle more stress hence less energy resistance.

Finite energy budget per person. Sequence of events leading to grey hair. Hierarchy of energy needs. Hair colour is very low on that hierarchy. So your energy will go to solve high stressors, which will mean less energy to grow black hair, which will then give you grey or white hair.

Real secret to anti-ageing = not wasting energy to stressors.

How to have more energy?

  1. Exercise
    1. Exercise imposes controlled stress. Adaptation occurs during recovery. Mitochondrial capacity increases.
  2. Consumption of quality food
    1. Every input has a metabolic cost. Food carries energy cost. Alcohol is a toxin. Clearing it expends energy. Foods with pesticides. High preservatives. Body has to spend energy to remove these toxins.
    2. Western diet, high sugar, high fats, is really bad. African tribes move all the time, eat very less. They have a lot less Alzheimer and diabetes.
  3. Overconsumption of food
    1. Your body needs to spend energy to get rid of un-needed food or calories. By eating the right amount, you have more energy left.
Steve says in some bouts of high stress, he has noticed that he will have grey hair for a couple of weeks

Type III diabetes (type 3 diabetes) is a relatively new, unofficial term. Disorder of energy in the brain. Insulin resistance in the neurons leading to cognitive decline and memory loss.

Obesity is a protection mechanism against energy resistance.

The world record for not eating anything is 300 days.

Martin recalls an episode where he was having high fever. All his energy went to fighting the infection. He simply could not do anything else, did not care for his work, his family, his lab. He analogises it to his energy theorem. Similarly, Steven recalls times in his early career where he could not pay his team for weeks, and he would just hide in his home for a couple of weeks and shut down as he was having all these stress. Completely lack of motivation. When his cash flow problem was resolved, he felt his motivation zoom back in.

Purpose purposes energy. A common goal in the team, is absolutely critical. Brings diffused energy to that purpose. Signal to noise ratio - another concept. Find those 3-5 things you need to get done in the next 18 hours. Anything else is noise. Steve Jobs is 80% signal 20% noise. Elon Musk is 100% signal. 16 hours, 60 mins an hour, all signal. Signal is that goal you have in those hours that you dedicate to your purpose. Nothing distracts you from those 3-5 things.

Resonance. Clarity of mind. Energy pattern comes out in every facet of our life. Picked up by other people. The founders vibe. It feels alive, purposeful. Other people that want to come onboard with it will resonate to you. Steve Jobs has this hypnotic ability, almost like a distortion field, confounding mix of intense charisma and unyielding willpower, sheer persistence to pull people to work together. Whether Steve Jobs was wrong or not, he had this ability to get people completely mesmerised.

More purpose in life = less energy resistance in your brain. Flow is easier. You see life. You feel more purposeful. Purpose itself creates more efficient mitochondria.

Lack of purpose naturally leads to depression. Protein elevated in diabetes, all sorts of pathologies. Marker of efficiency. This protein, biomarker, is called, GDF15. Can only be made by the brain, for the brain stem. Brain interprets as something is not right. Save energy, conserve energy. Don't do anything. That's how it comes out on you.

Patel, Satish, et al. "GDF15 provides an endocrine signal of nutritional stress in mice and humans." Cell metabolism 29.3 (2019): 707-718.

High levels in people likely to develop mental illness, cardiovascular diseases and likely to be dead, according to a study that followed 53,486 patients for 14 years.

High GDF-15 (GDF15) people don't like to go out. Don't like to go exercise. Don't like to walk for pleasure. Don't like to take the stairs. Don't like to go out with friends. GDF15 signals to your brain you are sick.

How? Meditation may help. Sleep. Connect with other human beings. Eat less.

Biohacking through methylene blue, urethane A, NAD+ boosters. Martin stays away from these supplements. He believes in staying aware. NAD+ seems to be the most supported in terms of literature, but he doesn't quite agree since most people don't suffer from a lack of NAD. Urethane A targets bad mitochondria removal. Supposed to help with muscle endurance. Martin doesn't take any of those supplements. He trusts the wisdom of his own body. Things heal in the animal kingdom.

Red light therapy, meditation and mitochondria

Red light therapy. Thousands of devices now. Helmet. Combs. Masks.

Let's all get into a red light box

Martin does not quite believe in red light as well. He still believes in the natural balance of the body. He believes that adding red light will just be regulated by the body system back into the normal homeostasis.

He does believe that there is some evidence supporting red light helps to increase energy flow in mitochondria in some studies. It follows a bell curve, some amount helps. Too much, will result in excessive ROS (reactive oxygen species).

What he does believe in though is, meditation.

Steven meditating in the podcast

Close your eyes.

Breathe in.

Breathe in, breathe out. Then breathe out, empty your lungs, and keep it there for as long as you can.

Feel the energy coming into your body. Feel the gravity pulling you into the chair. Feel the energy pulsating in your heart. Feel everything.

Up to 3-5 million people in America has ME/CFS symptoms

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a symptom of chronic fatigue lasting more than 6 months. Your blood tests look fine, but you just keep feeling fatigue.

Ultimately, Martin is a mitochondria researcher and likens every analogy to it. For example, a heart attack. The person having a heart attack feels a huge pain, 400 pounds of force on their heart. It is like mitochondria panicking.

The mitochondria is thought to be smaller bacteria that created abundant energy that was engulfed by a bigger bacteria many years ago. It created the first symbiotic relationship, and allowed the bigger cell to be freed of the energy needs, allowing the bigger bacteria to become social.

An example of ME/CFS is long COVID, where the solution is for people to exercise for mitochondrial health. Up to 20-24 million people in the world has this long COVID.

Research has looked at people with long COVID and found that their mitochondria capacity is much lower. They don't have the capacity right to exercise. He shared an example of a friend that had chronic fatigue. Could not get up to work. Could sleep for many hours. Could not get up for groceries shopping. What happened was the friend had a human connection come by. And she recovered from there, and never had chronic fatigue again since then.

In other words, if you, the reader, is feeling chronic fatigue from whatever reason, know that there is hope. That solution to recovery may come in the form of a human connection. It may come from taking the first step out to exercise. It may come from having quality food.

We leave you with a new word "mitoception". Everybody has a different way to get their mitochondria to work efficiently. Martin works out just 20 minutes every other day. He feels that going for a marathon would just injure himself. Listen to your own body and move forward from there.

P.S. Mitoception turns out to be a technique to artificially transfer isolated mitochondria from healthy donor cells (such as mesenchymal stem cells) into target or deficient cells. lol. Caicedo, Andrés, et al. "MitoCeption as a new tool to assess the effects of mesenchymal stem/stromal cell mitochondria on cancer cell metabolism and function." Scientific reports 5.1 (2015): 9073.
